Do auto body shops usually charge for estimates of damages?
And how long do they usually take?

Thanks!

its free to get an estimate,, if they want a charge before they give you an estimate, walk away, try another bodyshop

Something similar to the ‘hourly estimating’ books that all the shops use. This would be a great resource for anyone that wants to chack and see if their mechanic is trying to jack up the hours $$$ on them.

I believe autozone provides resources and tools on their website, but I dont know if it is specifically for repair and labor hourly estimates.

Its very hard for you to get an honest estimate online. An auto estimate is normally an estimate that is provided "hands on". Even if you were able to get an estimate and take it to a shop, that particular shop will still do their own assessment and come up with their own estimate regarding labor. You may be able to use your general estimate that you get online and use it to help with negotiating the price, but most shops will look to focus and make you pay their invoice price.

Also alot of labor charges tend to be location based. California will in all likelihood have different pricing than N.Y. or Ohio

My car has broken down. I have an estimate on getting it repaired (from Aamco).

Here is what they are doing to my car:
Rebuliding the Transmission
Replacing the Torque Converter
Installing 3 Engine Mounts (the other ones are cracked?)
Replacing the Rear Main Oil Seal
Replacing the Engine Oil Pan Gasket

The estimate is $2600.00…including labor. I am in Phoenix, AZ. Anyone who knows anything about this…..AM I GETTING A GOOD DEAL OR TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF??

Thanks for looking!
It’s a 200 Dodge Grand Caravan with about 120000 miles! Everything ELSE about the car is in great shape, too!!
I do need to add, too, that this is the SECOND time they have done MAJOR TRANSMISSION work on this vehichle!! We’re out of warranty….and we are paying just about the same as we did months ago for just about the same repair!!

I wouldn`t say they are the cheapest, but they are in the ballpark, Consider reputation and warranty when you finally decide who does the work. You might find a cheaper estimate, but I don`t think it will be excessively so. I don`t think you are getting a raw deal. Thats a lot of work.

I called a auto shop and asked how much break pads would cost, labor and installation. They said to bring it in so they could look at the car; they did, gave me an estimate, and charged me for the estimate.
They did not tell me of the est fee up front.

if you do the work there will the give you back your estimate fee?

The advice is all the same for auto repair scam prevention. You’ll be told to find an ASE certified shop. Ask around. Check out several different repair facilities first. Are they clean and neat? Do they provide written estimates? Check with the BBB. Is it AAA certified? Some will even advise to “ask for the parts back.”

Traditional tips and suggestions merely put a band-aid over an infected, gaping sore. Strong antibiotics are required to address the root source of the problems in the repair industry. To provide repair customers with the above advice is like sending a soldier into combat dressed in a pink tutu. We have to stop scratching at the surface.

There has not been any “new” advice in decades. More importantly, no one has answered why car repair scams have reached an estimated 40 billion dollars per year. Moreover, why is there still no solution to stop car repair scams?

The first hurdle to conquer is the perception of the frequency of auto repair scams. Many folks just don’t believe that car repair fraud is all that bad. Some even argue that the vast majority of repair shops do an honest day’s work, and that a few bad apples are making the rest look like crooks.

This is an interesting argument, and raises a number of questions.

1) If it is only a few “bad apples,” where are they hiding the 40 billion?

2) If most repair shops are honest, why does every state warn against car repair scams?

3) Why are auto repair shops at the top of consumer complaint lists every single year, in every state?

This is even expanding across the continents. For example, just last week Australia listed car repair scams at number 4 on their top 10 consumer complaint list.

The perception of frequency gets distorted because there are a number of levels to repair scams. There are the blatant rip-offs covered in the news. For a great video visit “Repair Scams Caught on Video” www.repairtrust.com. Then there are the common scams such as exorbitant prices and estimates, and aggressive scare tactics to get service customers to perform services. These occur every day.

The repair scams uncovered by RepairTrust not only found the tactics listed above and more, but a powerful undercurrent of scamming at the foundation of the automotive service industry.

In reality, most car repair scams go unnoticed by the service consumer. Service customers just have no idea that they were ripped-off. This under-the-radar scamming occurs in dealerships, local shops, and franchises. Affiliation with ASE, AAA, BBB, NADA makes no difference.

An ASE patch on a technician's arm, or an AAA or BBB sticker on the door of a service center means absolutely nothing in terms of a scam-free facility. Word of mouth recommendations can be just as devastating, as even shops that "seem" honest aren't.

Check out "Car Repair Prices: There Are No Honest Mechanics"
Isnare or RepairTrust for further discussion on this. Also, for NEW and FREE scam prevention tips visit the Car Repair Scam Articles @ RepairTrust.

Traditional tips are ineffective in today’s service industry. Service facilities have found new and ingenious ways of ripping people off. In truth, many of the old tips and suggestions have actually become weapons allowing service centers to indulge in car repair scams more than ever.

The car repair playing field must be leveled. Service customers need solid answers, and they need to be equipped with information, understanding, tools, and an insider’s view of the who, what, when, where, why, and how of price-gouging.

Navigating the dim underworld of today’s service centers with outdated information will cost a fortune.

I always seem to get asked "if this will be personal pay or insurance pay"? I asked what’s the difference? they never seem to have an answer for me. What’s up?

Thank you

Because if its insurance, many insurance companies have negotiated a lower fee with the shop than you will be able to get personally. If they go over that negotiated amount, then the insurance may not have them on their "preferred" list anymore. They dont care about screwing you, though.

When you need to file an auto glass claim, there are a few basic steps that you should follow. These steps will assure that you will complete the filing process properly and your auto glass replacement will be under way.

Step one in the auto glass replacement process is to inform your insurance company about the loss. Many insurance companies will cover the windshield repair in your car, so you will first want to contact your insurance company and report the loss.

When reporting the loss, be sure to give as much detail about the loss as possible. You will want to tell the date and time which the glass was broken, the extent of the break, how the glass got broken (vandalism, accident, and road hazard), who was in the car when the glass got broken, and any other information that the insurance will request.

It is very important to be as honest and as descriptive as possible. You should taken pictures of the broken glass as well. Your insurance company may ask you for the pictures or they may ask take their own pictures. Finally, they may ask you to come in or will send you some papers to sign in the mail. Contacting the insurance company is the first and most important step in properly filing an auto glass claim for your windshield repair.

Many insurance companies have a 24/7 hotline where your claim can be reported anytime during the day or night. Therefore, you have the option of reporting the incident as soon as it happens; however, you do not want to wait too long before reporting it. You should report it as soon as possible.

Once you have reported the broken glass to the insurance company, you are ready to get estimates on the auto glass replacement. Your insurance company may give you a list of approved windshield repair shops. You should take this list and get estimate from all of the companies on the list.

This is the research phase of the process. You want to find the auto glass replacement service that best fits your needs. When visiting the different windshield repair shops, you will also want to ask them questions such as, how long it will take them to complete your vehicle, what prices they offer, what different products to they sale, or even about the qualifications of the technicians. All of these questions are important and will help you to determine which auto glass replacement shop to use to complete your window repairs.

Once you have your estimates, you should let your insurance company know which auto glass replacement company you will be using. If it is an approved company on the insurance’s list of approved service centers, then you may get the deductible waived. If your insurance company will not waive the deductible, you will be responsible for paying that at the time of service.

This is usually paid right to the auto glass replacement service center. Either you or the insurance company will then contact the auto glass replacement service center and make an appointment to repair your vehicle. You can either bring your vehicle to there location or most shops today have mobile service trucks to come to you.

The replacement process takes about an hour on average once the technician has begun. When the job is complete, you might want to contact your insurance company and let them know how the job was done. Was it done properly? Do you notice any defects in the workmanship or the quality of the materials that were used? If so, you can contact the company yourself or your insurance company will arrange to have the auto glass replacement shop fix the problems and mistakes.

In conclusion, these are the basic steps to filing and completing an auto glass replacement claim. You should make sure that you follow them closely so that you can assure that your automobile is repaired properly and in a timely fashion. You want your automobile to be safe, so it is essential that you follow the above steps in order to assure the safety and comfort of your vehicle.
